How to properly care for your jewellery

Did you recently receive a new pair of earrings for Valentine’s Day? Did your partner recently propose with a beautiful diamond ring? Do you know how to preserve the glimmer of your new jewellery pieces? Here are five tips for caring for your fine jewellery to ensure it lasts a lifetime.

Store it correctly

Keep your jewellery in a fabric-lined box with compartments and dividers. Store each piece separately to prevent tangling and scratching. If you don’t have a jewellery box, carefully wrap each piece in a soft cloth or store it in a fabric pouch. Also, keep your jewellery out of moisture, direct light and heat, as these conditions can cause discoloration and accelerate tarnishing.

Keep it away from chemicals

Did you know lotion, perfume, nail polish, make-up and hairspray can actually damage your fine jewellery? To prevent permanent surface damage, remove your jewellery as you’re getting ready and put it on right before you head out the door.

Know when to remove it

Always remove your fine jewellery when working with your hands or engaging in activities that involve chemicals or abrasives. For example, it’s good practice to take off your jewellery before swimming in chlorinated water, going to the beach, cleaning your home, gardening or working out at the gym.

Clean it properly

Most precious metals and gemstones can simply be cleaned with warm water, mild fragrance-free soap and a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush. Make sure each piece is thoroughly rinsed and dried prior to storing. Never use harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia. Avoid at-home ultrasonic cleaners, as they can loosen the gems set in your jewellery.

Have it professionally inspected

Caring for your jewellery is an important part of maintaining its value and beauty. Ben Moss offers an Extended Service Plan (ESP) to give you peace of mind. When you sign up, an authorized Ben Moss craftsperson will check your jewellery for specific issues like nicks, scratches, worn prongs, broken clasps and loose stones. They’ll then perform any necessary repairs to ensure your piece remains in usable and wearable condition.
