The men’s guide to accessorizing with jewellery

Men’s fashion is often characterized by functionality and comfort. When it comes to jewellery, expressive choices can feel to some guys like too much bling. Fortunately, with some thoughtful choices, any man can express their unique identity with creative jewellery choices. Here are a few principles to keep in mind.

Follow the one-metal rule, or don’t

When it comes to choosing metals for your jewellery, the standard rule of thumb is to wear one type of metal for all your jewellery. If you’re married, you might stick with the colour of your wedding band, typically gold or silver. However, men’s jewellery is becoming much more inclusive. Therefore, you might enjoy mixing it up some days with rugged gunmetal or cheeky rose gold.

Even jewellery designers are breaking the one-metal rule these days. Mix things up with this two-tone Surveyor watch from Bulova. For an extra stroke of drama, check out this diamond ring in sterling silver and 10-karat gold.

Experiment with colours and layers

If you like to indulge your creative side, try wearing pieces with a pop of colour. This ruby and diamond ring is sophisticated and expressive without compromising masculinity. Are you into blue? From sapphire to topaz, there are plenty of hues to choose from.

For adaptable jewellery looks, layer simple pieces as much or as little as you like to suit the occasion. Layer chains of varying weights and lengths, or combine a single statement pendant with coordinating chains. You can also mix and match bracelets. Rather than the one-metal rule, try to keep your metals within the same tone (think stainless steel with silver) or include a piece that combines different coloured metals.

Consider when to use restraint

If you want to keep your jewellery within the standards outlined by your workplace or another organization, you’ll likely have to avoid facial piercings or stand-out pieces. Restraint is also advisable if you wear a medical alert device — don’t obscure this life-saving piece with ornamental extras.

A watch is the ideal way to discreetly express your individuality and sophistication. Try on a statement piece like the Citizen Automatic Promaster watch in titanium. If your vibe is more classic with a twist, try the Surveyor watch with a leather strap from Bulova. Other pieces you can wear to express your style more conservatively are elegant cufflinks or a signet ring.
